Teacher's Notes
Week 1 - Getting to know scripts - in the first week students should have a basic understanding of the elements of scripts as well as the formatting
FIRST LESSON -
-students should be walked through the criteria,
-students should discuss the purpose and importance of the screenwriter and of the script itself
-students should look at a script (see screenwriting help sheet on home page for links to websites)
-students should be walked through basic elements of script formatting (slugline, action, character and dialogue)
-students should watch the video on screenplay formatting (found on helpsheet)
-students can make their own cheatsheet to help them identify elements of a script (this can be done by getting a screenshot of a screenplay and annotating it on photoshop)
-students can make dos and do not cheatsheet on screenplay formatting (based on the info they get in the screenplay format video on the helpsheet)
(the 'can's can be homework)
SECOND LESSON -
-students should recap screenplay formatting
-students should create a celtx account
-students should be shown a video(s) from script-to-screen youtube channel
- students should be shown video on what action is and discuss
-students should be shown video on how to write good action and discuss
-students make their own cheatsheet to help them identify elements of a script (this can be done by getting a screenshot of a screenplay and annotating it on photoshop) which should include dos and don'ts learned from the videos they have seen
-students should start practicing using celtx to understand it (see helpsheet for more help)
-students should start a simple writing challenge (write about the lesson you're in or their weekend)
-Student can watch video on how to write better dialogue whilst writing up their cheat sheet
-students can be shown screenplay format - extra video, this might help

THIRD LESSON
- Students should come to class with reading from a script at home - this could be checked and discussed.
- Watch this scene from Blade Runner 2049 (maybe first 1.30)
- Students write the scene out using celtx
- Students read out and share the script
- Students make amendments
- Students watch the script to screen version
- Possibly go back and make ammendments
- extra challenge students to watch The Black Hole and write the script for it (focusing on the action.
-HOMEWORK - set students a writing challenge, dramatizing a childhood memory maybe they should have a week to do this.
Week 2 - P1 - students should spend 2 lessons on this. Go through P1 first part of a lesson, then let them work on it. This should be done as homework. The third lesson should be a writing lesson. This should be going over their writing challenge from last week.
- HOMEWORK - finish P1 - due first lesson back in Week 3. + reading scripts online
Week 3 (half week) - Genre - students should understand what a sci-fi is. Students should be watching films and clips in lessons and analysing them. They should draw from these ideas for their script.
- HOMEWORK (for the week and half term) - students should work on their ideas sheets. This can be set as homework if not completed in the 3 lessons. + reading scripts online and watching and analysing sci-fi films
Half term
Week 4 - Filming week. Students should spend the week doing filming activities.
Week 5 - P2 /P3 - Students should start writing. Every lesson, get some table readings and spitballing sessions going. You could set the students up with a writing buddy. It might also be worthwhile to show them clips of sci-fi films as well as helpful scriptwriting videos to keep things fresh.
Week 6 - P3 - Students should continue writing. Every lesson, get some table readings and spitballing sessions going. You could swap the students with a new writing buddy. It might also be worthwhile to show them clips of sci-fi films as well as helpful scriptwriting videos to keep things fresh.
Week 7 - P3/P4/P5 - Students should finish up their drafted script. Compose an email for their feedback. If they are waiting, they could research shooting script, as well as watching other screenwriting videos to get their script to the next level. It might be worthwhile trying to get P4 in by the end of the week so feedback can be done over the weekend.
Week 8 - P5 - Students should work on their script. A table reading should be done before they submit.
Pre P1
This time should be spent:
- Understanding scripted elements (action, dialogue) by watching videos and being walked through by the teacher
- Setting up Celtx (practicing) - see the helpsheet
- Practice writing - see writing challenges
- Reading professional scripts - students can also annotate the scripts to highlight areas they don't understand - see script websites on the help sheets
- Analysing scripts
- Watch sci-fi films
- Watch script-to-screen videos
P1
- It should be encouraged for students to continue watching sci-films throughout P1, if time allows.
- It should be encouraged for students to continue practicing writing in scripts in Celtx out of class during P1.
- Student should be walked through what they have to do in P1
- If time allows, the teacher could organise table readings for the first script
- The students should be doing either 1 or 2 scripts by themselves and sharing the rest with their partner/group. The students will need to summarise the work which has been shared with them.
P2
- It should be encouraged for students to continue watching sci-films throughout P1, if time allows.
- It should be encouraged for students to continue practicing writing in scripts in Celtx out of class during P2.
- Students should be encouraged to share and give feedback on others ideas - this could be done in a round-table spit-balling session
- Students should be shown how to write effective loglines, this can be found on this video.
- Students must avoid using college locations when creating ideas
P3
- Students should peer assess during this time, however, they still will need feedback from the teacher, so there script should feel like a draft not their final submission
P4
- Students should be shown what is included in a professional email (this can be done by showing them previous work - see Nadia)
P5
- Students should read through the feedback given, depending on the teacher, fill out the feedback form.
- All students should be encouraged to make their script into a shooting script as this will allow them to get their D1.
