P1

Your main submission will be the opening 5-10 pages of a sci-fi film.

(see teacher's notes for pre-p1 work)

To succeed on this unit you need to be reading as many scripts or excerpts
as possible and doing as many writing challenges as you can.
This will require you to be dedicated and hardworking outside of the classroom.

P1

Here are the scripts you will be using for P1:
Game of Thrones - (0-17pg)
Alien - (0-13pg)
Blade Runner - (0-12pg)

(If you want to annotate on these scripts, I suggest that you use pdfzorro to do so.)

You will be analysing these scripts based on 5 different criteria:
a)  style
b)  content
c)  narrative structure
d)  genre
e)  target audience

You are required to analyse 2 scripts and peer mark a third script. You will be using

this document for your analysis. Your analysis will consist of summarising and
exploring the criteria whilst backing up your thoughts with evidence in the forms
of quotes.

STYLE
We need to investigate and analyse the style of scripts.
You should explain, discuss and evidence the following rules and formats:
Slugline
Action
Dialogue
Other

You should also comment on how the script is presented (think script aesthetics)

Do they write in a distinct and unique way (using lots of capitals, short sentences etc).

CONTENT
Summarise the following points:
A. Characters:
How are we introduced to the characters? Why have we been introduced to
them in this way? How does the character and what they want become known
to the reader?

B. Locations:
How are the locations introduced? What mood or atmosphere did they give
to the scene?

C. Scenes:

What are the significant events of the scenes? Was their any conflict between
the characters that resolved in the narrative moving on?

NARRATIVE STRUCTURE
For narrative structure you would also talk about the structure of the show.
Is there a single narrative (single strand), or many plots that interweave
(multi-stranded narrative), does it go back and forward in time (non-linear
timeframe), or simply linear?

GENRE
How do we know what genre it is? What are the clues? List the genre conventions
that are in the script and use quotes.

TARGET AUDIENCE
Who is the target audience and why? Consider age, gender, spending power.
Use quote marks for quotes that match what you think that target audience
would like and say why. Is there a secondary audience? Explain.

Checklist for your blog:

- Analysis of either Alien or Blade Runner
- A copy of the original analysis of either Alien or Blade Runner done by your partner
